Dispatched for a motor vehicle accident (MVA) with entrapment at 161 E. Ward Street, Hightstown, NJ.
Deputy 41 arrived on the scene and reported a single vehicle partially on its side (passenger side), wedged between the Peddie Lake bridge and the bridge’s walkway. The deputy confirmed one (1) entrapment in the front passenger seat.
Chief 41 arrived and assumed command.
Rescue 41 arrived shortly after. Alongside Deputy 41, Rescue 41 deployed gray struts and straps to stabilize the vehicle. One strut was placed in the rear wheel well area. Due to the front end of the car being wedged in the ironwork of the bridge, a tie-back method was employed using the Paratech/BAR ratchet strap, securing the car frame to the uncompromised ironwork. Additional cribbing was placed in voids for further support.
Once the vehicle was stabilized, Station 41 and additional crews began extrication efforts for the victim. Using multiple cutters and spreaders (Holmatro Battery-powered), crews removed both driver’s side doors and the roof of the vehicle from an elevated position, as well as one rear passenger door, to gain access and safely remove the victim
The victim was extricated in a safe manner and care was transferred to the awaiting BLS and ALS teams.
