Little Rock Fire Department

On May 27, 2025, Little Rock Fire Department’s Rescue 2, Engine 2, and Battalion 1 responded to a mutual aid request from Alexander and Bryant Fire Departments for a heavy vehicle extraction on Interstate 30 Eastbound.

Upon arrival, crews found a Ram 3500 pickup truck—towing a fully loaded dump trailer of roofing material—wedged underneath the rear of an 18-wheeler trailer. Rescue 2, with assistance from Engine 2, performed a dual airbag lift on the trailer, creating just enough clearance for the pickup’s front bumper to clear the rear trailer wheels.

Working in coordination with Alexander Command, Rescue 2 established a dual-pull system using the winch from Bryant’s rescue unit and a heavy wrecker on scene. Simultaneously, crews cut and removed the seat mounting system to slide the driver’s seat back, allowing better access.

As the vehicles were separated, Rescue 2 began patient access. The driver’s door had been removed prior to our arrival. A high-pressure ram was used at full extension to aid in extrication. During removal, webbing was used to displace the brake pedal from the patient’s ankle, fully freeing the patient.

Two tourniquets were applied immediately to the patient’s legs before transport. The patient sustained bilateral leg fractures and multiple lacerations but was transported to a local hospital for surgery and is expected to make a full recovery after a lengthy hospital stay.

This call highlights the outstanding coordination and teamwork between departments and agencies to ensure a successful outcome during a highly technical rescue.
